I’ll confess — while I do enjoy pistachio and roses separately — I would be a little nervous to put them together. Which is why I was intrigued but wary when the kind folks at Tea Horse sent me a sample of their Pistachio Rose tea. After a few sips, my concerns were quickly put to rest. This is a unique and very lovely tea. While it technically fits in the green tea category, it’s so incredibly different.

Lu An Gua Pian is a very unique and high quality green tea hailing from the Anhui province which literally translates into “melon seed tea”. It’s characterized by the shape of the tea leaves, which are flat and long. This tea is also quite labor intensive. Unlike many green teas which use the new bud or leaf tip, the second leaf on the branch is removed, deveined, and then pan-fried. Thanks to the kind folks at Petite Gaiwan for a chance to try this tea.

This tea recently arrived in the post thanks to the folks at Peony Tea S, and I’ve really been enjoying it as an extremely good, consistent everyday tea. The tea was very flesh and flavorful, and definitely one that I’ll be finishing.

Aiya has recently launched consumer-sized tins of their Japanese loose leaf teas, and I was fortunate enough to receive a sample of their premium gyokuro tea. If you’re not familiar with gyokuro, it’s a fine Japanese green tea that’s grown under shade (unlike sencha, which is grown in the full sun). The method in which it’s grown gives the tea a sweet flavor that is distinctive from other teas. This tea is an excellent example of good gyokuro tea and worthwhile to try if you enjoy green teas. It’s sweet and very light on the tongue.

Review: Aiya Matcha Powdered Green Tea

Review: Aiya Matcha Green Tea

This is really my second adventure in matcha green teas, thus the lack of the review (click here for my first time with matcha tea). The folks at Aiya were kind enough to send me several samples of different grades of matcha tea, which was a pleasure to try. The tea is incredibly fresh to the taste, and is a treat to be able to try.
