Better known for its oolong and green teas, it’s unusual to see traditional black tea coming from Taiwan. Needless to say, I was intrigued to receive this tea by way of a gift from some Taiwanese visitors.

I love trying new teas, and am delighted to get a chance to sample the latest launch from Les Palais des Thes. They recently announced their Plaisirs Purs range, a collection of four blends which present a simple yet very appealing idea – classic teas paired with the natural extracts of fruits and flowers in four flavors: “le citron” (lemon), “la poire” (pear), “la fleur d’oranger” (orange blossom) and “la menthe glaciale” (frosty mint). I haven’t had a chance to try all four flavors, but here’s an initial impression.

It’s been several months since I’ve reviewed a black tea (the last tea I reviewed in this category was Blue of London), and I’m very fortunate to be revisiting this type of tea with a wonderful Earl Grey blend sent over thanks to the folks at Whittard today. This earl grey is a wonderfully flavorful and refreshing cup, a perfect way to spend a leisurely afternoon.

The Kenilworth Estate Ceylon from Tea Licious is a full-bodied black tea with a mild and slightly astringent taste. It pairs well with milk and sugar, which goes a long way to rounding out its flavor. Thanks to the kind folks at Tea Licious for providing this tea to try.

Chi of Tea’s Earl Grey Windermere Oolong has a smooth, full-bodied taste with a pleasant taste of rich, malty chocolate. While an enjoyable tea, I’m beginning to doubt that I received a properly labeled sample from them as it doesn’t really seem to detect the tastes of bergamot or cream; instead, it came across to me as a malty chocolate on a black tea base.

I’ve been into black tea lately after considerable time devoted to many steepings of various oolong teas. Adagio’s Darjeeling tea is another bright gem among many of the black teas available on the market today. The liquor is invigorating and flavorful without being overpowering. I liked its full-bodied richness which stands up well on its own without cream and sugar. (Though, of course, it’s delicious with a bit of cream and sugar).

Review: English Breakfast, Boston Tea Company

Review: English Breakfast

Score
Tea Type

Boston Tea Company’s English Breakfast steeps into a robust and bold cup — perfect for the morning or an afternoon cup of tea. I can definitely see drinking this tea all day long! It’s full-bodied and very smooth to the taste, with some nuttiness and smokey flavor in the cup. As the cup cools, the tea becomes slightly sweeter. I would love this tea as an iced tea or a chai, and it would also pair well with milk and sugar. Thanks to the folks at Boston Tea Company for sending this my way!

Teaflection’s Earl Grey brews into a bold, complex and deeply flavorful cup which does a terrific job of bringing out the floral, citrusy flavor of its bergamot flavoring. It’s a wonderful pairing which really creates a full-bodied cup of deliciousness which is perfect as a strong tea to wake up with in the morning, or as an afternoon break. This tea has become one of our household staples that we drink every day, and I LOVE it! If you’re a fan of Earl Grey, after tasting this tea all of the teabags will feel like a wan, sad shadow of the real thing. Thanks to Teaflection for sending over this tea to try!
